We get it—photos are part of the fun. But staring at every angle, zooming in on every seam, and comparing your dress to edited stock images is a slippery slope. Here’s the reality: fitting rooms have bright, unflattering lights that help us work, and your gown is a work in progress during this phase. It’s not about perfection in the moment—it’s about achieving that stunning fit for your big day. Take pictures to commemorate the experience, but don’t overthink, nitpick or start being hard on yourself. Trust the process, and remember that your dress is meant to fit you, not a photoshopped ideal.
Your fittings are a personal experience, and the voices in the room can make or break the vibe. Too many opinions—especially conflicting ones—can turn an exciting moment into an overwhelming one. Instead, bring one or two people whose input you truly value and who will lift you up. This keeps the focus on you and your vision, without the distraction of too many perspectives.
Your undergarments might be the unsung heroes of your wedding day, but swapping them out halfway through fittings? That’s a recipe for chaos. A different bra or shapewear can completely change how the dress fits, making it too tight, too loose, or just plain awkward. If you started with a push-up bra and later switch to a no-padding option, your seamstress will be left wondering if your gown suddenly lost its confidence! To keep everything on track, bring your wedding-day undergarments to every fitting—or at least let your seamstress know about any questions or concerns ahead of time. It’s all about keeping the dress—and you—fully supported.
We know you want to look great, but your fittings aren’t the time for a full glam look or a fresh self-tan. These can transfer onto your dress, leaving marks that might not come out completely. While most seamstresses can handle light cleaning, why risk it? Keep your skin clean and your makeup minimal to protect your gown before it’s time to walk down the aisle. If you need to do a makeup trial before a fitting, we get it, just be sure you wash your hands and try to avoid touching your dress.
Your wedding shoes are just as important as your gown when it comes to fittings. The height of your heels determines the length of the hem and where the bustle sits. Even a slight change can throw off the balance or cause double work for your seamstress (and possibly double the cost for you). Let me be crystal clear: we want THE shoes, not a similar shoe, BUT If you don’t have your wedding-day shoes yet, bring a pair with a similar heel height so the alterations stay on track. And once you’ve committed, stick with them to avoid delays or additional fittings.
Your fittings should be a joyful experience, not a source of stress. By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll set yourself up for a smooth, drama-free process. At deMelis Atelier, we believe in making every step of your wedding journey as seamless as possible—pun intended. So relax, trust your team, and enjoy seeing your dream dress come to life.
