The first look has become a favorite tradition for many couples, offering a private moment to connect before the whirlwind of the ceremony and reception. It’s romantic, intimate, and often results in some of the most beautiful photos of the day. But for brides wearing long gowns, it can also come with a hidden risk: the dreaded dirty hem.
One bride recently shared how her dress picked up dirt and debris during her first look, leaving her hem looking less than picture-perfect before she even walked down the aisle. It’s a scenario no one wants, but the good news is, with a little planning, you can avoid this and still have the first look of your dreams.
If your gown has a wrist loop or bustle, use it to carry the hem off the ground as much as possible. A wrist loop can help keep your dress clean while you walk to your first look location, whether it’s indoors or outdoors. If your dress doesn’t have one, consider working with your seamstress to add one during your alterations—it’s a small detail that can save you a lot of stress.
Hot tip: Loops are often made from branded ribbon that includes a manufacturer logo. When held, it looks a little chaotic. The trick I always tell brides and nearlyweds is to grab the ribbon and hook it over your hand, catching your thumb. Then grab the train of your dress to cover the loop and make a beautiful picture when you’re walking.
Outdoor first looks can be breathtaking, but they also come with challenges like dirt, grass, and uneven terrain. If your heart is set on an outdoor spot, choose a location that’s easy to navigate in a gown and avoid areas with mud or sharp rocks. Staying still and having your fiance come to you can be a good solution if terrain is less than ideal for walking. A quick jaunt across a clean, paved path or a manicured lawn is one thing; trekking through a forest or beach is quite another. Plan ahead to avoid a messy or even snagged dress.
Despite your best efforts, a little dirt on your dress might be inevitable. That’s okay! The key is to plan ahead. My favorite time-tested option is Grandma’s Secret Spot Remover. Keep a bottle in your emergency kit along with a clean, white towel or cloth and a small spray bottle of water. I have seen it firsthand work wonders on the WORST stains and be sure to give yourself extra time after the first look to clean up and re-steam or fluff your gown if needed.
Veils are stunning but can be easily snagged or dirtied during a first look. Consider skipping the veil for this moment and saving it for the ceremony. This not only keeps it clean but also allows you to move more freely and focus on enjoying the first look experience. Plus, it’s a great way to create a new look your partner still hasn’t seen when you head down the aisle.
Your first look should feel magical, not stressful. With these simple tips, you can focus on the joy of the moment without worrying about your dress. Whether you’re walking across a grassy field or standing in the glow of a candlelit room, a little planning ensures your gown—and you—stay picture-perfect.
